Are you noticing that your life is being impacted by…

  • Asking for constant reassurance that food is fully cooked, not expired, and not left over?
  • Avoiding going out to eat or eating any food that you did not see prepared?
  • Refraining from social gatherings, especially during norovirus season?
  • Constantly questioning if you feel nauseous, or if those around you are sick?
  • Limiting what you eat to a shrinking list of “safe” foods?

Exposure therapy empowers you to:

  • Understand your fear, that you are not crazy, that you aren’t weak, and explain why your brain and body react this way.
  • Identify and work toward goals that are most important to you and your values – to live life freely.
  • Develop tools to overcome triggers, and reduce overwhelming anxiety and panic.

You don’t have to live life feeling afraid and ashamed. I can help you break free from the grasp of emetophobia.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are exposure therapy sessions like?

I will teach you about emetophobia and outline a path to your success which will include challenging problematic thoughts, exposing and managing provoking reactions (gradually experiencing triggers), and creating a plan to maintain progress post-therapy.

How long will I need to be in therapy for?

There are many factors that affect the length of therapy, such as severity of your symptoms, if you are struggling with other mental health issues, how often we meet, and how much you practice applying the tools outside of session. Many of my clients like to “graduate” from therapy once they reach their goals, and some prefer to meet every one to two months for “maintenance” sessions to help them stay on track with their progress. Sometimes a client may have a different issue or therapy goal that they would like to start working on.

How do I know that exposure therapy will work for me?

Although research shows great benefit, there are no guarantees that exposure therapy will work for you. However, if you are motivated to make a change, and are comitted to consistently practicing what you learn outside of session, you can increase the likelihood of success.

Do I have to throw up to get over my fear?

Nope! Therapy isn’t about making you throw up to face your fear. It’s about learning to accept more uncertainty in life. The possibility of vomitting can never be 100% eliminated, and building your ability to tolerate anxiety and uncertainty will allow you to live an enjoyable and fulfilling life.
