How do I know if in-person therapy is right for me?

There are pros and cons of meeting with a therapist in-person.  Online therapy is great for clients who do not have a good internet connection or a working smartphone, tablet, or laptop to do virtual sessions.  Some people feel more comfortable (and able to talk about difficult things when) meeting in a neutral space such as a therapist’s office.  Meeting face-to-face can also be beneficial if there are a lot of distractions in your home environment, a lack of privacy, or you are worried about pets/children/others in your household interrupting your sessions.

There is a saying that body language is 80% of communication, and there is a lot of truth to this!  In-person therapy provides more nonverbal cues than would be available with video therapy.  Meeting face-to-face can also provide opportunities for more direct support during certain exposure therapy sessions.

There are some potential downsides to in-person therapy.  For example, it may be less accessible for some due to transportation issues, costs, and inclement weather.  There tends to be more limited availability, and therefore can result in longer wait times to get an appointment.  Scheduling may be more difficult as well, as someone may be able to meet virtually during work hours, but not have enough time and flexibility to attend an in-person session.  As with being in any public space or environment, in-person therapy can pose an increased risk of getting sick or COVID-19, especially for those who are at higher risk.

What precautions are you taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19?

Masks are not required at this time, however if either of us do not feel comfortable with this, we will both wear masks during your sessions.  If one of us are not feeling well, experiencing possible symptoms of COVID-19, or have been in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, we will meet virtually as a precaution.  High touch surfaces are sanitized, and windows are opened (weather permitting) to allow for increased ventilation.  Paperwork is completed electronically for multiple reasons, including reduced close contact and sharing of pens/papers.  My office is set up to allow for social distancing.  I also have a form about these and other safety measures for you to review and electronically sign prior to your first appointment.
